NNPC Extends Petrol Discount to October 31, Says No Return to Subsidy

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has extended its petrol discount programme across its retail stations nationwide until October 31, 2026, as part of efforts to cushion the impact of elevated global crude oil prices on Nigerian households and businesses.

The company, however, clarified that the initiative is a temporary customer relief measure and does not represent a return to petroleum subsidy or a reversal of the Federal Government’s market-based fuel pricing policy.

In a statement issued on Friday, October 9, NNPC said the extension followed the Federal Government’s renewed commitment to providing relief to Nigerians amid rising petroleum prices driven by global market uncertainties and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The company explained that the discount was initially introduced on October 1 to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary but would now continue until the end of the month.

NNPC said the initiative was intended to ease the financial pressure on consumers, particularly households, transport operators and businesses whose operating costs are affected by higher petrol prices.

“We recognise that higher petrol prices affect everyday life, from the cost of commuting to the expenses of running a business,” the company said, noting that the discount was designed to provide direct relief to customers during the challenging period.

The clarification followed a statement by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, on October 8, 2026, on the government’s efforts to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices.

NNPC said it remained committed to working with the Federal Government and other stakeholders to implement practical measures that could help ease the burden of elevated energy costs on Nigerians and the wider economy.

However, the company stressed that the discount applied specifically to NNPC Retail outlets and did not establish a uniform national petrol pump price. It added that the initiative would not alter the market-based pricing framework governing petroleum products in the country. The distinction is significant as Nigeria continues to operate under a market-based petrol pricing regime following the removal of the longstanding petrol subsidy. nder this framework, domestic pump prices remain influenced by market conditions and the cost of supplying petroleum products.NNPC’s statement also sought to address possible public misconceptions that the temporary discount amounted to a policy reversal by the Federal Government. The company urged Nigerians to disregard interpretations suggesting that the initiative represented a restoration of petroleum subsidy, maintaining that its objective was to provide targeted customer relief while preserving commercially responsible operations.Beyond pricing, NNPC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining reliable petroleum product supplies and improving customer service across its retail network. The company said it would continue to communicate the scope and duration of its customer initiatives to ensure that consumers understood the applicable terms and could make informed purchasing decisions. The extension comes at a time when developments in the international oil market remain a major consideration for domestic petroleum prices, with geopolitical tensions capable of influencing crude oil supply expectations and market sentiment. For households and businesses, the immediate benefit of the discount will depend on the applicable reduction at participating NNPC Retail stations and the prevailing prices charged by other marketers.NNPC reiterated its appreciation for Nigerians’ continued patronage, assuring consumers that it would sustain efforts to provide practical support while maintaining reliable supply and commercially responsible operations.
