Seplat Energy Plc

Fastest Growing Nigerian Independent Energy Company of The Year

SEPLAT ENERGY PLC is the fastest-growing Nigerian independent energy company of the year.

This award comes after ENERGY TIMES Board and a body of Advisers’ careful assessment of the company’s recent success in the acquisition of the entire issued share capital of Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited (MPNU) in Nigeria which has increased the entire company’s portfolio by 186%.

This transaction translates to the acquisition of Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited’s 40% stake in four oil mining licences, covering more than 90 shallow-water and onshore platforms and 300 producing wells; the Qua Iboe export terminal and a 51% interest in the Bonny River Terminal and Natural Gas Liquids recovery plants at EAP and Oso.

The deal automatically shoots up the company’s production by 186% to 146,000 boed, also lifting its 2P liquids reserves to 650 mmbbl, and its 2P gas reserves to 1,712 bcf, with undeveloped gas potential of 2,910 bcf, highest among other indigenous oil companies.

These landmark achievements, no doubt, deserve high commendation and celebration as the country seeks to increase its daily oil and gas production and export.

The company began its real journey into oil operation when it acquired a 45% interest in, and was appointed operator of, three onshore producing oil and gas blocks in the Niger Delta (OMLs 4, 38 and 41) in July 2010. Seplat subsequently grew oil production to a peak rate of 85,200 barrels (13,550 m3) of oil per day and had almost doubled its remaining reserves at the end of 2015. In June 2013, Seplat acquired an interest in the Umuseti/Igbuku marginal field area within OPL 283 and in February 2015 acquired interests in OML 53 and OML 55.

Alongside its oil business, the company has also developed its gas reserves. In 2015-16, Seplat installed and commissioned a new 375 million cu ft/d (10.6 million m/d) gas processing facility at its Oben hub, taking gross overall processing capacity to 525 million cu ft/d (14.9 million m3/d).

On February 8, 2015, it was announced that Seplat had purchased stakes in two onshore Nigeria blocks from Chevron Nigeria for a combined $391.6 million.

Seplat changed its name from Seplat Petroleum Development Company to Seplat Energy in 2021.

In December 2024, Seplat finalised its $1.28 billion acquisition of Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited from ExxonMobil. This deal was initially stalled due to a legal challenge by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) in 2022, which was resolved after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu‘s intervention.

With these, Seplat Energy Plc remains a leading and fastest growing Nigerian independent energy company having also been listed on both the Nigerian Exchange Limited and the London Stock Exchange within 10 years of operations.

Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC)

Regulatory Agency Of The Year

Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) is the Regulatory Agency of the Year.

ENERGY TIMES’ Board and a body of Advisers’ were impressed with the agency’s outstanding regulatory interventions in the nation’s Power Sector in 2024.

The commission under its Chairman, Engr. Sanusi Garba has become an institution that barks and bites. The eleven electricity distribution companies now pay fines, and penalties for infractions, such as overbilling of hapless consumers. Many Nigerians would not forget in a hurry your immediate action against Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and other DisCos for non-compliance with prescribed customer band classifications. This action includes a mandate for AEDC to reimburse all customers in Bands B, C, D, and E, who were billed above the allowed tariff bands. This action was unprecedented and deserves applause.

Besides, the commission’s proactive actions in protecting electricity consumers are well-noted and commendable.

The Commission’s constant industry stakeholders’ roundtable meetings have helped in stabilizing the industry and protecting electricity consumer interests.

The NERC is an independent body, established by the Electric Power Sector Reform Act of 2005 (repealed), now the Electricity Act of 2023, to undertake technical and economic regulation of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI). The Commission is to, among others license operators, determine operating codes and standards, establish customer rights and obligations and set cost reflective industry tariffs. The Commission has its headquarters in Abuja, and currently has presence in most states of the country through its Forum Offices which function as the first level of escalation for customer complaints that are not resolved by the electricity distribution companies (DisCos).

Mr Wale Tinubu, CON, GCEO, OANDO PLC

GCEO Of The Year

MR Jubril Wale Tinubu, CON, is the Group Chief Executive, Oando Plc. He is ENERGY TIMES’ GCEO of the year, having grown the company from a single company to a conglomerate. Tinubu’s leadership style has become a model of how an indigenous oil company could become an international organisation in a complex industry and environment like ours.

As the Group Chief Executive of Oando Plc, sub-Saharan Africa’s foremost Indigenous energy group, with a primary listing on the Nigerian Stock Exchange and a cross-border listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, Wale Tinubu has demonstrated how a long time vision can be a reality. He has successfully transformed Oando from a petroleum marketing company to a formidable integrated energy group, adding international supply and trading, gas and power, energy services and exploration and production to its operations portfolio.

We are particularly impressed by the company’s recent successful acquisition of 100% of the shareholding interest in the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) from the Italian energy company, ENI, for a total of $783 million. This acquisition is not only a significant milestone to Oando’s long-term strategy to expand its upstream operations, but also to the entire Nigeria and its economy.

Born 1967, Wale Tinubu in 1994, co-founded Ocean and Oil Group, one of the first indigenous trading companies with extensive operations exporting Nigerian petroleum products. He led Ocean and Oil’s successful bid for a stake in Unipetrol, the largest ever acquisition of a quoted Nigerian company, with Unipetrol Plc’s purchase of Agip Nigeria Plc. The group was rebranded to Oando Plc.

He built strong subsidiary brands and businesses, specifically in the midstream, including Axxela Limited (formerly known as Oando Gas and Power) and in the downstream, OVH Energy (formerly known as Oando Marketing Limited).  Axxela is the foremost and preferred gas and solutions provider for the future of Nigeria’s industrialisation, serving over 175 industrial and commercial customers via its network of natural gas infrastructure.

In 2019, Oando concluded its phased divestment from Axxela to a vehicle owned by Helios Investment Partners LLP (Helios), a premier Africa-focused private investment firm, for a total of about $160 million.

OVH Energy has the largest distribution footprint in Nigeria with over 1,500 trucks, 50 million litres in tank storage capacity, over 400 retail station outlets and is the first privately owned mid-stream jetty in West Africa. In 2019, Oando successfully divested Oando Marketing Limited to the Vitol Group and Helios Investment Partner, resulting in the formation of OVH Energy for about $461million.

Today, Oando is known as an upstream company with interests in downstream. The company’s dominance in the upstream sector was another first for an indigenous company.

In 2014, Mr. Tinubu led Oando Energy Resources (OER), the upstream subsidiary, through the $1.8 billion landmark acquisition of Conoco Phillips Nigerian businesses, fortifying the company as one of the largest indigenous independent oil & gas companies in Nigeria.

Today, OER has assets in the Niger Delta and West African sub-regions with 14 licences, a current net production of about 43,000 boepd, 2P reserves of about 470.7mmboe, 2C reserves of about146.9 mmboe.

In the downstream, Oando Trading DMCC (OTD) is a supply and trading company, a key participant in international oil markets with a significant presence in the West African region, and direct access to major energy markets across Africa via its offices in the United Arab Emirates, South Africa and Nigeria.

Kyari’s consistency and doggedness in pursuing the present’s administration policy has helped in sustaining and entrenched competitiveness in the Nigerian downstream subsector of the Nigerian economy.

Under the leadership of Mele Kyari, NNPC has grown in leaps and bounds. Kyari has achieved remarkable milestones and recorded several “firsts” in the industry. These milestones include groundbreaking advancements in exploration, production, and global partnerships that were previously thought unattainable.

These successes attest to Kyari’s focus on competence and professionalism.

Under Kyari’s watch, NNPC Ltd, since becoming a CAMA company in 2021, has shown that it is ready to compete among its peers globally.

The leadership of Kyari has also improved the productivity and financial performance of NNPC Ltd.

NNPCL has moved from a loss position of N1.7billion in 2019, to an unimaginable profit growth. The management of the NNPC reversed the loss trend by posting a profit of N287billion in 2020, N674.1billion in 2021, N2.54trillion in 2022, before hitting the current figure of N3.29trillion in 2023.

As a result of the improvement in profitability, income tax paid to the government for the 2023 financial period also rose by N1.87trillion from N717.07billion in 2022 to N2.69trillion.

The shareholders of NNPC Ltd also received a final dividend of N2.1trillion, which translated into a dividend payout ratio of 80% during the 2023 financial period.

Posting such impressive returns has further demonstrated the NNPC Ltd’s commitment to sustaining profitability and supporting the attainment of national energy security as stipulated by the Petroleum Industry Act 2021, and by extension, as expected by the company’s shareholders.

NNPC Ltd has been recording a string of production successes from the JV portfolio which have significantly lifted overall national production.

Beside the recent start of production at the Madu Field by the NNPC Ltd/First E&P JV, the company has achieved the restart of production at OMLs 29 and OML 18 in late 2023 which have steadily contributed an average of 60,000bpd to the nation’s production output.
