NNPC Confirms Gas Availability, Says No Constraints on Deliveries to Power Plants

NNPC Limited has clarified that the gas transportation network operated by its subsidiary, NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC), remains fully available to support gas deliveries to power generating stations nationwide, saying there are no transportation-related constraints on its network responsible for the current decline in electricity generation.

The clarification comes against the backdrop of the Nigerian Independent System Operator’s (NISO) statement of November 5, 2026, which attributed the current decline in electricity generation primarily to limited gas availability to thermal power plants and reduced water inflows to hydroelectric stations.

According to NNPC Limited, NGIC’s operational records do not indicate any transportation-related constraint within its network that could explain the current reduction in power generation. The national oil company said it remains focused on actualising the Federal Government’s gas development and monetisation agenda, which, according to the company, has contributed to about 10 per cent growth in gas production volumes year-to-date in 2026.

NNPC therefore maintained that gas supply availability, as a broad production and transportation issue, should not be conflated with the operational status of individual power plants or the availability of gas at specific generating facilities.“Gas supply availability is therefore not a challenge as NNPC remains committed to supporting efforts to improve electricity generation through safe, reliable and efficient gas supply and transportation,” the company said.

However, NNPC stressed that the gas-to-power value chain involves several distinct operational stages that must be assessed independently when determining the causes of a decline in electricity generation. It noted that gas production, commercial supply arrangements, transportation infrastructure and actual gas deliveries to individual power plants are separate components of the value chain and should not be treated as interchangeable.

The company said a comprehensive assessment of the current power generation shortfall must also take into account the availability and operational readiness of generating units, plant maintenance schedules and actual gas offtake at individual power stations.

“These factors determine whether gas supplied can be converted into electricity,” NNPC stated, adding that they should be verified alongside gas supply data to establish the precise causes of the current generation shortfall. The company further called for a coordinated review of operational data involving gas suppliers, gas transporters, power generating companies and NISO.

According to NNPC, such a review would help identify specific constraints across the gas-to-power value chain and guide targeted interventions to address them.It stressed that accurate and transparent reporting across the entire value chain is essential to resolving the challenges confronting the electricity sector and sustaining public confidence.

“Accurate reporting across the gas-to-power value chain is essential to resolving the challenges and sustaining public confidence,” the company said.

NNPC Limited reaffirmed its commitment to dependable energy infrastructure and constructive collaboration among stakeholders, with the ultimate objective of translating Nigeria’s abundant gas resources into more reliable electricity for Nigerians.
