Cameroon’s Sonara Signs Fuel Supply Deal with Dangote Group, MRS Oil

Cameroon’s state-owned oil refinery, Société Nationale de Raffinage (Sonara), has signed a strategic fuel supply agreement with Nigeria’s Dangote Group and Lagos-based MRS Oil & Gas Company to strengthen the supply of refined petroleum products to Cameroon.

The agreement, signed on October 22 in Lagos, is aimed at establishing a stable, reliable and sustainable supply arrangement for petroleum products, as Cameroon seeks to address its growing dependence on imported fuels amid rising global energy prices and geopolitical uncertainties, particularly the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Sonara announced the agreement on Friday, describing the partnership as an important step towards strengthening Cameroon’s petroleum supply chain and ensuring improved access to refined products.

The development is particularly significant for Cameroon, which has depended entirely on imported refined petroleum products since 2019, following an explosion that severely damaged its sole domestic refinery, forcing the country to rely on international suppliers to meet its fuel requirements.

The partnership brings together three key players in the petroleum value chain, combining Dangote Group’s refining capacity, MRS Oil & Gas Company’s downstream distribution network and Sonara’s strategic role in Cameroon’s domestic petroleum market.

The agreement is expected to provide a more structured supply arrangement, potentially improving the availability of petroleum products and strengthening energy security in Cameroon.

For Nigeria, the deal further underscores the growing regional significance of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which is increasingly positioning itself as a major supplier of refined petroleum products to African markets.

Meanwhile, Sonara disclosed that a ceremony scheduled to formally launch the partnership had been postponed due to last-minute scheduling constraints involving Dangote Group President, Alhaji Aliko Dangote.

The company said a new date for the official launch would be announced in due course.
