Decentralization of national grid will aid access to electricity in Nigeria – Experts

Economic experts have said that decentralization of the national grid into mini -grid across six geo-political zones in Nigeria would aid access to electricity.


Speaking at the 2025 Dr. Diran Fawibe’s annual lecture series, third edition, in Ibadan, Oyo state capital on Wednesday, Engr. Valerie Ifueko Agberagba, General Manager, Generation Projects Department, Niger Delta Power Holding Company, said as part of efforts to deplete the 90 million figure of Nigerians inaccessible to electricity, the federal government should establish a mini grid across the six geo-political zones in the country.


“We have to begin to speedily depleting this 90 million figure of Nigerians who are still struggling to have access to electricity by deploying a mini grid of solar power to each zone of the federation. By this, each zone will generate its own electricity”, she suggested
To achieve this, Engr. Ibrahim Sulaiman, a professor of Engineer, suggested that equipment needed should be accessible locally, stressing that energy transition has come to stay.


Speaking during a round table discussion with the theme achieving energy equity: Strategies for a just energy transition, Mr. Pierre Vanhaecke, Technical Director, International Energy Service Limited/ DORIS Limited, commended Nigeria’s government investment in the power sector.


“When comparing Nigeria and its population with other neighboring countries, Nigeria is not doing badly. What needed to be done is to constantly developing its grid to meet its growing needs”
The event highlighted the need for development of national framework and partnerships for sustainable energy access and security.
