NISO restates commitment to Nigeria’s electricity market

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Engr. Abdu Mohammed Bello, has reaffirmed the organisation’s unwavering commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s electricity market and ensuring improved service delivery across the power sector.

Speaking during an online media parley on Thursday, Bello stated that NISO remains focused on delivering its core mandate of promoting electricity reliability, operational efficiency, and transparency in the administration of Nigeria’s electricity market.

He explained that the organisation would continue to implement policies and operational strategies aimed at building confidence among stakeholders, enhancing market discipline, and driving sustainable growth across the various segments of the electricity value chain, including generation, transmission, distribution, and market operations.

According to him, transparency and accountability remain critical to the long-term success of the sector, noting that NISO is committed to creating a fair and credible market environment capable of attracting investment and fostering improved performance.

Bello also expressed concern over what he described as the increasing misrepresentation of facts and inaccurate media reportage regarding developments in the Nigerian power sector.

He noted that such misinformation not only undermines public confidence in the industry but also creates a trust deficit among operators, investors, policymakers, and electricity consumers.

While acknowledging that some inaccurate reports may not be intentional, Bello said investigations have shown that many of the gaps in reportage stem from a limited understanding of the technical and regulatory operations of the electricity sector by some journalists and media professionals covering the industry.

He therefore stressed the need for stronger engagement between sector stakeholders and the media to improve knowledge-sharing, promote accurate reporting, and ensure that the public receives factual and balanced information about reforms and developments in the power sector.

The NISO boss further reiterated the organisation’s readiness to collaborate with media practitioners, industry players, and government institutions in advancing a more stable, efficient, and investor-friendly electricity market for Nigeria.
