In order to tame the trend of vandals and thefts in its installations, the Transmission of Company of Nigeria (TCN), said it has installed CCTV cameras in all the 39 sub-stations in Lagos region.
According to the Company General Manager, Engr. Mojeed Akintola, the installations became necessary due to persistent vandalisation of TCN’s equipment running into billions of Naira.
“Last year alone, 10 of our transmission towers fell down by these vandals. We are still not yet out of it. We are collaborating with security agencies, the baales and kings to help us in taming this trend. Definitely, we can’t do it alone without the help of communities where these installations are based”, he stated
Akintola stated that TCN management had also visited some end buyer-companies whose trade in stock is to buy vandalized cables and equipment.
“We have met a number of these companies that buy these vandalized equipment. We asked them to work with us to stop the menace and the response of some of them has been positive “
He also disclosed that 10 new sub-stations are currently under construction in the region which comprises Lagos and Ogun states, would be delivered soon, stressing that 25 other transmission projects are ongoing.
“These projects when completed will improve power supply to both Lagos and Ogun states”, he explained.
Meanwhile, the ongoing installation of 1x300MVA 330/132kv transformer as well as 2×100/125mva power transformers at Alagbon sun station will boast electricity supply to Lagos by additional 200mw, according to the Asst. General Manager, Transmission, Engr. Mustapha Hassan
