TotalEnergies and its Nigerian partner, AMNI International, have taken the Final Investment Decision (FID) on the development of the offshore Ima Gas Field in Nigeria, in a major step towards unlocking a gas resource that has remained undeveloped for more than five decades.
The $800 million project, located on Oil Mining Leases (OMLs) 112 and 117 near Bonny Island, Rivers State, is expected to commence production in 2028 and reach a plateau of about 350 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMscf/d), equivalent to more than 60,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
Gas produced from the field will be transported by pipeline to Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG), where it is expected to provide about one-third of the feedgas required for the Train 7 expansion project.
The Train 7 expansion is designed to increase NLNG’s liquefaction capacity from about 22 million tonnes per annum to approximately 30 million tonnes per annum, strengthening Nigeria’s LNG export capacity and potential foreign-exchange earnings.
TotalEnergies said the FID represented another important step in its integrated gas strategy in Nigeria, with the project adding competitive, low-cost gas resources to support domestic and export markets.

President Bola Tinubu welcomed the FID, describing it as a major milestone in the Federal Government’s efforts to unlock Nigeria’s vast gas resources for industrialisation, job creation and economic growth.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday.
According to the statement, the Ima Gas Project, being developed by Nigerian independent exploration and production company AMNI International in partnership with TotalEnergies, is expected to produce about 300 MMscf/d at peak, while the project’s development plan provides for a plateau output of about 350 MMscf/d.

The Ima gas resource, located offshore in OMLs 112 and 117, was discovered in 1973 but remained undeveloped for more than 50 years.
The FID is expected to pave the way for the development of the field and its integration into the gas supply chain serving NLNG.
