Adelabu assures Nigerians of improved power supply in two weeks

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has formally apologised to Nigerians over the recent nationwide electricity outages, describing the disruptions as temporary and assuring citizens that power supply will improve within two weeks.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, Adelabu acknowledged the hardships caused by the blackouts, particularly during the peak of the dry-season heat, which has affected homes, schools, businesses, and industries across the country.

“I want to apologise to Nigerians, officially now, coming from me as the Minister of Power, for this temporary issue that is leading to hardship being experienced,” he said.

The minister attributed the outages to supply constraints beyond the ministry’s immediate control, including limited gas deliveries, pipeline maintenance challenges, and financial pressures on power operators.

Adelabu, however, reassured citizens that efforts are already underway to stabilise electricity supply.“With the committee we have established, commitments from gas suppliers, and the ongoing pipeline repairs, we should begin to see improvements in supply within two weeks,” he stated.

He explained that the government has set up a dedicated committee to monitor compliance by gas producers with domestic supply obligations, alongside new payment structures designed to incentivise increased gas delivery to power plants.

The minister also reaffirmed the Federal Government of Nigeria’s target of boosting electricity generation to 6,000 megawatts before the end of 2026, describing the current situation as a temporary setback in the broader power sector reform agenda.“Power generation will improve, transmission will improve, distribution will improve, and Nigerians will benefit greatly by year-end,” Adelabu said.

He concluded by pledging better performance in 2026, noting that the ministry is determined to surpass previous achievements.

“If we delivered strong service in 2025, this year we are committed to doing even better,” he added.
