SEEPCO’s donor club tackles blood shortages to save lives

Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited (SEEPCO) has continued to demonstrate its strong commitment to healthcare and community development through impactful outreach programmes and employee-focused initiatives aimed at saving lives and strengthening public health systems.

Across its host communities, SEEPCO regularly organises healthcare outreach programmes and medical camps that address common health challenges such as malaria, typhoid, cough, high blood pressure, skin conditions and other ailments.

These interventions, conducted across various local government areas, provide free medical consultations, essential medications and basic laboratory tests on the spot.Since its inception, the company has also prioritised the health and wellbeing of its employees by providing comprehensive healthcare facilities and support structures to respond effectively to emergencies across its locations in Nigeria.

As one of Africa’s fastest-growing oil exploration and production companies, SEEPCO has remained dedicated to meeting the healthcare needs of its workforce and the communities in which it operates.

Driven by this enduring commitment, SEEPCO employees have taken an additional step towards social responsibility by establishing the SEEPCO Blood Donor Club.The initiative is designed to create a dependable platform through which the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Committee (LSBTC) and other healthcare providers can mobilise blood donations during emergencies.SEEPCO’s supported non-profit organisations, particularly Vcare for Development Foundation (VCDF), have also been working in partnership with LSBTC, the Nigerian Red Cross Society and other health institutions to address critical blood shortages affecting emergency patients, expectant mothers, accident victims and children in need of life-saving blood.Since 2022, VCDF, in collaboration with LSBTC, has organised annual blood donation drives involving volunteers from SEEPCO.

Through these efforts, more than 850 pints of blood have been contributed to Lagos State’s blood bank, benefiting over 2,000 patients and their families.This achievement highlights VCDF’s unwavering commitment to promoting voluntary blood donation and tackling Nigeria’s persistent blood shortage challenges.

Commending the initiative, the Executive Secretary of LSBTC, Dr. B. I. Osikomaiya, described the SEEPCO Blood Donor Club as a thoughtful and laudable intervention that aligns with the state’s goal of ensuring a safe, sufficient and readily available blood supply.She noted that the structured donor club would provide a sustainable and reliable mechanism for emergency blood mobilisation, particularly during critical periods.

Similarly, Head of the Donor Recruitment Unit at LSBTC, Olayinka Animashaun, applauded SEEPCO and VCDF for their dedication to improving public health and emphasised the positive impact of the campaign.She encouraged the expansion of such initiatives, recommending that blood donation drives be organised at least twice annually to help close the existing gap in blood availability.

Speaking on behalf of SEEPCO, the General Manager, Human Resource and Industrial Relations, Dr. Chris Offokansi, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting public health initiatives across Nigeria.He stated that the Blood Donor Club would promote voluntary blood donation among employees, raise awareness and strengthen partnerships aimed at fostering a culture of giving.

According to him, SEEPCO will continue to pursue initiatives that deliver meaningful and lasting impact in the communities it serves.
