NEPCL Powers Lekki Police Division with 12KVA Solar System

…Strengthens community security, clean energy and ESG commitment

Nembe Exploration and Production Company Limited (NEPCL), operator of the NNPC/Nembe Joint Venture (OML 29), has strengthened its commitment to environmental, social and governance (ESG) responsibility with the donation of a complete 12KVA inverter-solar power system to the Nigeria Police Force, Lekki Division, Lagos.

The intervention, which combines renewable energy with community security, is aimed at improving the operational capacity of the police station while supporting cleaner and more reliable energy use.

The project comprises solar panels, inverter equipment and lithium-battery storage, providing the Lekki Police Division with an alternative and more dependable source of electricity for its day-to-day operations.

The Nigeria Police Force, Lekki Division, formally expressed appreciation to NEPCL for the gesture, describing the donation as a demonstration of corporate responsibility, goodwill and partnership.

The significance of the intervention extends beyond the provision of power equipment. Reliable electricity is increasingly important to the effective operation of public institutions, while security remains fundamental to economic activity and community confidence.

In an area such as Lekki, which has developed into a major residential, commercial, industrial, hospitality, technology, logistics and investment corridor, the operational effectiveness of security institutions has implications for the wider business environment.

The Lekki axis is also home to major economic developments and provides connections to important port, industrial and real-estate activities. Strengthening the capacity of local security infrastructure therefore contributes to the broader resilience of the corridor. The economic relevance of Lagos provides further context.

The Lagos State Economic Development Update 2025, drawing on data from the National Bureau of Statistics and Lagos Bureau of Statistics, reported that Lagos generated ₦43.06 trillion in GDP in 2023, representing 18.38 per cent of Nigeria’s national GDP. In the first half of 2024, the state accounted for ₦27.39 trillion, or 22.36 per cent of national GDP.

The Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission has also described Lagos as contributing approximately a third of Nigeria’s GDP, although estimates vary according to the reference period and methodology used.Importantly, there is no authoritative published dataset that isolates the contribution of businesses in Lekki as a specific percentage of Nigeria’s GDP.

It would therefore be inappropriate to attach a precise national GDP figure to the Lekki business corridor or suggest that the NEPCL intervention directly generates a measurable share of national output.Rather, the stronger ESG argument is that Lekki forms part of the wider Lagos economic ecosystem, whose productivity contributes significantly to Nigeria’s economy.

Investments that strengthen security and infrastructure help preserve the conditions necessary for businesses, residents, workers, investors and visitors to operate with greater confidence. From an ESG perspective, the NEPCL initiative cuts across all three pillars.

Environmentally, the solar installation promotes renewable energy and battery storage, reducing dependence on conventional power sources and supporting cleaner energy use.Socially, it strengthens a critical public institution responsible for protecting lives and property and maintaining security within a rapidly growing community. From a governance standpoint, the project demonstrates practical collaboration between the private sector and a public security institution, translating corporate responsibility into a tangible community benefit. For NEPCL, the Lekki Police Division project offers a model of targeted community investment—one that responds to a specific local need while aligning with broader sustainability and development objectives.

As Lagos continues to consolidate its position as Nigeria’s commercial and investment powerhouse, corporate ESG initiatives are likely to be judged increasingly by their tangible impact on communities and institutions. The NEPCL intervention demonstrates how clean energy can strengthen public institutions, stronger institutions can support security, and improved security can help sustain confidence in a vital economic corridor. The 12KVA solar power system may be modest in scale, but its significance lies in the practical connection between sustainability, security and economic resilience.
