Tegbe Commissions 2×100MVA Transformers at Ijora Substation

The Federal Government has commissioned two 100MVA, 132/33kV power transformers at the Ijora Transmission Substation in Lagos, increasing the facility’s installed capacity from 90MVA to 230MVA and adding 112MW of bulk transmission capacity to the network.
The Minister of Power, Mr. Joseph Tegbe, commissioned the transformers on Monday, August 17, 2026, describing the project as a major intervention in strengthening electricity supply to one of Nigeria’s most economically active corridors.
The upgraded Ijora substation is expected to improve electricity supply to Ijora, Costain, Oyingbo, Customs and adjoining communities, while supporting businesses and millions of consumers within the Eko Electricity Distribution Company franchise area.
Tegbe said the project was significant because Ijora is located within a densely populated economic corridor hosting major industries, ports, commercial centres and communities critical to Lagos’ economy.
“The significance of today’s event goes beyond commissioning of two transformers. It is about supporting the industries, ports, commercial centres and communities that keep Lagos moving,” he said.
The Ijora substation previously operated with three 30MVA transformers, providing a total installed capacity of 90MVA, equivalent to approximately 72MW.
Under the latest intervention, two of the existing 30MVA transformers have been replaced with two modern 100MVA transformers, bringing the total installed capacity to 230MVA, equivalent to 184MW.
This represents an additional 112MW of bulk transmission capacity.
Tegbe said the additional capacity would help ease transmission constraints and unlock electricity supply for economic activities across the areas served by the substation.
He stressed that the Federal Government’s power sector strategy goes beyond increasing generation, noting that electricity must also be efficiently transmitted and delivered to consumers.
According to him, Nigeria has faced situations where available generation could not be fully evacuated because of transmission limitations, while growing demand was not matched by corresponding investments in transmission infrastructure.
He said strengthening the transmission network was therefore critical to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ambition of transforming Nigeria into a $1 trillion economy.

Tegbe commended the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), World Bank, Shanghai Electric Group Company Limited and other technical and development partners for their contributions to the project.
He also praised the Lagos State Government and the engineers, technicians, consultants, contractors and other professionals whose efforts contributed to the completion of the project.
The minister formally commissioned the two 100MVA transformers and associated upgraded facilities on behalf of President Tinubu, dedicating the project to the people of Lagos and the businesses and industries driving the state’s economy.
