Former Chairman, Eko Electricity Distribution Company
Mr. Oritsedere Otubu is the recipient of the Power Sector Expert of the Year Award 2025, in recognition of his exceptional leadership, deep sector expertise, and transformative impact on Nigeria’s power distribution landscape. His strategic vision has not only elevated Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Eko DisCo) to consistent high performance but has also influenced broader market stability and strengthened Nigeria’s electricity value chain.
Under Mr. Otubu’s stewardship, Eko DisCo has demonstrated sustained operational excellence, financial discipline, and performance leadership among Nigeria’s eleven electricity distribution companies. At a time when the sector grapples with longstanding challenges—including billing gaps, collection shortfalls, technical and commercial losses, and liquidity constraints—Eko DisCo has stood out as a benchmark for efficiency and reliability.
In the first half of 2025, while the total revenue collected by Nigerian distribution companies rose to ₦564.7 billion in the second quarter alone, Eko DisCo emerged as the leader in collection efficiency at 87.80 per cent, outpacing peers and contributing significantly to improved liquidity within the market.
Eko DisCo’s achievements under Mr. Otubu’s strategic guidance include:
These metrics reflect not only Eko DisCo’s operational depth but also Mr. Otubu’s emphasis on robust governance frameworks, rigorous revenue assurance, and disciplined financial management—even as the wider sector contends with aggregate technical, commercial, and collection (ATC&C) losses well above regulatory targets.
Beyond headline numbers, his leadership has catalyzed concrete improvements in sustainable infrastructure, customer service innovations, and system reliability. Under his chairmanship, Eko DisCo has advanced network strengthening initiatives, expanded metering rollout plans, and deployed digital engagement platforms that streamline billing, payments, and service interactions—moves that have measurably improved customer experience while tightening revenue cycles.
Mr. Otubu’s strategic stewardship has also helped the company thrive in a complex market environment, where distribution companies collectively face ATC&C loss rates significantly above the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) targets, translating into sector revenue erosion of tens of billions of naira annually.
His leadership approach emphasises long-term value creation, institutional resilience, and inclusive growth. These principles have guided Eko DisCo to not only meet but often exceed key regulatory performance indicators, even as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) reports industry struggles with billing, collection, and remittance consistency.
This award celebrates Mr. Otubu’s strategic vision, his unwavering commitment to excellence, and his tangible contributions to Nigeria’s power sector. His leadership at Eko DisCo continues to inspire confidence among investors, regulators, and consumers—affirming that disciplined execution, operational innovation, and a performance-driven culture can yield measurable improvements within one of Nigeria’s most challenging infrastructure sectors.
Egbin Power Plc is the Electricity Generation Company (GENCo) of the Year 2025 in recognition of its outstanding operational performance, strategic resilience, and critical contribution to Nigeria’s electricity supply stability.
In 2025, Egbin Power Plc played a pivotal role in driving improvements in Nigeria’s grid performance despite significant sector-wide constraints, including persistent gas supply challenges, transmission bottlenecks, and reduced off-take by Distribution Companies (DisCos).
Over the year, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) reported significant improvements in national electricity generation, with total energy generated in Q1 2025 rising by 10.92% to 10,304.47 GWh, and average hourly generation on the grid increasing by 13.39% to 4,770.59 MWh/h, up from 4,207.41 MWh/h in Q4 2024 — an increase of 563.18 MWh/h. Thermal plants like Egbin were among the key contributors to this rise.
Individually, Egbin consistently posted industry-leading generation figures:
These figures are particularly noteworthy given that, in the same periods, the national grid’s plant availability factor hovered around 38–41 % and average dispatchable capacity remained below potential due to systemic constraints — underscoring the exceptional operational efficiency Egbin maintained relative to national averages.
As Nigeria’s largest thermal power station, Egbin’s contributions have been essential to base-load stability on the national grid, reinforcing its position as a cornerstone of system reliability and a major driver of sectoral performance improvements.
This award celebrates Egbin Power Plc’s strategic investments in asset optimisation, proactive maintenance, and operational excellence, which not only bolstered its generation output but also strengthened the resilience of Nigeria’s power sector in one of its most challenging periods.
